Independent Children, Mother Still Matters: Mattering to Children and Empty Nest Syndrome among Mothers

The departure of children from home to pursue education, marriage, or employment is a natural part of the family life cycle. However, this transition often leads to profound feelings of loss in mothers, commonly referred to as empty nest syndrome. A sense of mattering to one’s children is believed to help mothers cope with this condition. This study aimed to examine the relationship between mattering to children and empty nest syndrome in Indonesian mothers. A quantitative method with purposive sampling was employed, involving 107 middle-aged housewives in Indonesia. The study utilized The Mattering Index (MI) and the Empty Nest Syndrome Scale – Indian Form (ENS-IF) as measurement tools. The results showed a significant negative correlation between mattering to children and the level of empty nest syndrome (r = –.686, p < .001). The lower the mothers’ sense of mattering to their children, the higher their level of empty nest syndrome.
