From Envy to Action: A Psychological Analysis of the Relationship between Workplace Jealousy and Counterproductive Behavior

Abstract

Envy is a common emotion in the workplace and can lead to counterproductive work behavior (CWB) such as stealing, sabotage, and absenteeism. This study examined the relationship between workplace envy with counterproductive work behavior among employees of Company X in Jakarta. This study used quantitative approach, and data collected using survey methods using two psychological scales. The target population consists of all production division employees of PT. Company X in Jakarta with total of 55 employees selected using a total sampling technique. Results of this study showed that there is a significant negative relationship between benign envy and counterproductive behavior. The findings of this study will provide important insights for managers and organizations to understand the negative consequences of workplace envy and develop strategies to reduce its impact on counterproductive work behavior among employees
