Lumina: Indonesian Journal of Neurology is an open-access, peer-reviewed journal dedicated to advancing the field of neurological sciences, with a focus on both basic neuroscience and clinical neurology. The journal publishes original research, reviews, and intriguing case reports. It also welcomes brief communications that highlight recent advancements in diagnostic techniques, treatments, or other relevant neurological health issues. Additionally, letters and commentaries on previously published articles are encouraged.

Peer Review Process

Lumina: Indonesian Journal of Neurology uses an Open Peer Review process to improve transparency and trust in scientific publishing. This process is guided by the following principles:

  1. Reviewer Identity Transparency: Reviewers’ identities are shared with authors, ensuring accountability and encouraging constructive feedback.
  2. Public Review Access: Review reports are made publicly available alongside the articles, allowing readers to view the peer review process and understand the reviewers’ evaluations of the strengths and weaknesses.
  3. Interactive Review: Authors and reviewers can engage in open communication during the review process, promoting collaboration and improving the manuscript’s quality.
  4. Reviewer Recognition: Reviewers have the option to sign their reviews and be publicly acknowledged for their contribution.
  5. Ethical Standards: All participants must adhere to ethical guidelines to ensure fairness, respect, and bias-free reviews.

The Open Peer Review model aims to increase transparency, accountability, and overall quality in the peer review process, benefiting authors, reviewers, and the academic community. Key features of the Open Peer Review Model for all research articles published in the journal include:

  • Disclosure of reviewers’ names to the authors to promote transparency and accountability.
  • Publicly available review reports that provide readers with insight into the peer review process.
  • Direct interaction between authors and reviewers to facilitate constructive dialogue and manuscript improvement.
  • Reviewers can sign their reviews and receive public acknowledgment for their contributions.
  • Adherence to ethical guidelines ensuring fairness, respect, and a bias-free process.
  • Editorial decisions and the rationale behind them are openly shared with the authors, enhancing trust in the publication process.

Review Process Stages:

  1. Submission and Technical Check: Manuscripts are first checked to ensure they meet formatting and ethical standards.
  2. Initial Editorial Review: The editorial team assesses whether the manuscript is appropriate for the journal’s scope.
  3. Assignment to an Editor: If appropriate, an Editor is assigned to manage the peer review process.
  4. Reviewer Selection: The Editor selects reviewers who are experts in the relevant field to evaluate the manuscript.
  5. Review Process: Reviewers provide detailed feedback on the manuscript’s quality, validity, and contribution.
  6. Author Revisions: Authors revise the manuscript based on reviewer feedback, which may involve multiple rounds of revision.
  7. Final Decision: The Editor makes a final decision based on reviewers’ suggestions and the revisions. Possible outcomes include:
    • Accepted as is: The manuscript is accepted for publication without changes.
    • Accepted with Minor Revisions: The manuscript is accepted with minor revisions within a specified timeframe.
    • Accepted with Major Revisions: The manuscript is accepted after significant revisions are made by the authors within a specified timeframe.
    • Resubmit (conditional rejection): The manuscript may be reconsidered after major revisions.
    • Rejected (outright rejection): The manuscript is not accepted for publication, even with major revisions.
  1. Publication: Accepted manuscripts are copyedited, formatted, and published. Plagiarism screening for submissions is conducted using the Turnitin application.

Lumina: Indonesian Journal of Neurology publishes three times a year, every January, May, and September

Open Access Policy

This journal offers immediate open access to its content based on the belief that freely sharing research with the public fosters a broader global exchange of knowledge. Authors retain copyright over their articles and grant third parties the right to use, reproduce, and distribute the articles in accordance with the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License.

Author Fees and Publication Charges Policy

Lumina: Indonesian Journal of Neurology is an open-access journal. The submission, review process, and publication are all free of charge. Full articles can be read and downloaded at no cost from this site.

  • Article Submission Fee: 0.00 (IDR) or 0.00 (USD). Authors are not required to pay a submission fee as part of the submission process to cover review costs.
  • Review Fee. The journal offers two review options:
  1. Regular Review: 0.00 (IDR) or 0.00 (USD) - No fee is required for authors choosing the regular review process.
  1. Fast-Track Review: 0.00 (IDR) or 0.00 (USD) - This expedited review option is available upon request from the authors.
  • Article Publication Fee: 0.00 (IDR) or 0.00 (USD)

If an article is accepted for publication, authors are not required to pay a publication fee to cover publishing costs.

Author Self-Archiving Policy

Authors are encouraged to archive preprints and postprints of their articles in institutional repositories or personal websites. However, the final published version must be cited correctly, and embargo periods may apply depending on journal policies. We support open-access initiatives and self-archiving to maximize research visibility. 

Competing Interest Policy

Authors, reviewers, and editors must disclose any financial, personal, or professional conflicts of interest that could influence their work. This includes funding sources, affiliations, or relationships that may affect objectivity. All competing interests will be stated in the published article to ensure transparency. 

Copyright Policy

Authors who publish with Lumina: Indonesian Journal of Neurology retain the copyright to their work but grant Lumina: Indonesian Journal of Neurology the right to first publish it. By submitting their work, authors agree to the following conditions:

  • Copyright: Authors grant Lumina: Indonesian Journal of Neurology an exclusive license to distribute and publish their work under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International License (CC BY-SA 4.0). This allows others to remix, adapt, and use the work for commercial purposes, provided they credit the authors and license any derivative works under the same terms.
  • First Publication Rights: Lumina: Indonesian Journal of Neurology holds the rights to be the first publisher of all submitted manuscripts.
  • Author Rights: Authors retain their copyright and are allowed to post their work online (such as in institutional repositories or on their personal websites) prior to or during the submission process. This can encourage valuable exchanges and increase citations of their published work.

Ethics and Misconduct Policy

All submitted papers containing animal experiments and/or involving human subjects should have obtained approval from an independent ethics committee. As mentioned above, the approval copy should be provided to the editorial office.

Advertising Policy

We accept advertisements relevant to the medical and scientific community. Advertisements must align with our ethical values and should not mislead or promote unverified claims. The editorial process remains independent of any advertising influence, ensuring the integrity of published content.

Informed Consent Policy

For each article submitted to Lumina: Indonesian Journal of Neurology, informed consent must be obtained from every participant. Informed consent refers to the written permission provided by a patient or their representative approving the publishing of any information, images, or case reports related to the patient’s clinical condition in MJI. The informed consent and patient confidentiality policies align with all applicable data/privacy protection regulations and the Fourth Amendment of the 1945 Constitution of the Republic of Indonesia, Article 28(G).

The patient consent form should adhere to the local regulations where the study took place. Authors must state in the manuscript whether informed consent was obtained, including consent to publish information about the patient involved in the study. The journal editor may request the author to submit the consent form. In some cases, informed consent requirements may be waived. The ethics committee that reviewed and approved the study determines whether informed consent is required or waived. For studies where informed consent is waived, the author must provide the official ethics committee approval letter that includes the waiver.

All patient identifiers, such as names, initials, birth dates, and medical record numbers, must be removed from any published data or information. In any images, including those from ultrasound, radiography, computed tomography, pathology, or surgical images, the patient’s face must be blurred, or if applicable, the eyes must be obscured with black bars. All images must be de-identified.

Failure to provide the required informed consent form for a study will result in the rejection of the submission.

Research Ethics Policy

Our journal upholds the highest ethical standards in medical research. We adhere to international guidelines, including the Declaration of Helsinki and COPE (Committee on Publication Ethics) principles. All studies involving human or animal subjects must have received prior approval from an appropriate ethics committee. Authors must ensure informed consent, data integrity, and compliance with ethical regulations. Plagiarism, data fabrication, and other forms of misconduct will not be tolerated.

Ethical Guidelines for Journal Publication

Publishing an article in a peer-reviewed journal such as Lumina: Indonesian Journal of Neurology Journal is crucial for advancing a reputable network of knowledge. It reflects the quality of the authors’ work and the institutions supporting them. Peer-reviewed articles adhere to the scientific method, making it essential to set clear ethical standards for authors, editors, reviewers, publishers, and the public.

As the publisher, Department of Neurology of the Faculty of Medicine of Universitas Pelita Harapan takes its ethical responsibilities seriously, overseeing every stage of publication. We ensure that commercial interests like advertising, reprints, or other revenues do not influence editorial decisions. Furthermore, Department of Neurology of the Faculty of Medicine of Universitas Pelita Harapan and the Lumina: Indonesian Journal of Neurology Editorial Board maintain communication with other publishers and journals when necessary.

Publication Decisions

The Editor-in-Chief of Lumina: Indonesian Journal of Neurology is responsible for making final decisions on article publication, based on recommendations from the editorial board and reviewers, and in compliance with legal requirements regarding defamation, copyright, and plagiarism. The editor collaborates with the editorial team and reviewers when making these decisions.

Non-Discrimination

Editors and reviewers evaluate manuscripts solely on their intellectual content, without discrimination based on the authors’ race, gender, sexual orientation, religion, ethnicity, nationality, or political views.

Confidentiality

Editors, reviewers, and editorial staff must keep manuscript details confidential and share them only with the corresponding author, reviewers, potential reviewers, editorial team members, and the publisher when necessary.

Disclosure and Conflicts of Interest

Unpublished material from submitted manuscripts cannot be used by members of the editorial board or reviewers in their own research.

Reviewers’ Responsibilities

  • Contribution to Editorial Decisions: The journal uses a double-blind review process. Reviewers assist the editor-in-chief in making editorial decisions and improving the quality of manuscripts.
  • Promptness: Editors are committed to timely reviews. If a reviewer is delayed, the manuscript is reassigned to another reviewer.
  • Confidentiality: Manuscript content must be kept confidential. Except for the editor-in-chief, reviewers and editors should not discuss the paper with anyone else, including the authors.
  • Objectivity: Reviews should focus on the content and be respectful, offering constructive and justified comments.
  • Acknowledgment of Sources: Reviewers should identify relevant works not cited by the authors and report any substantial similarities with previously published works.
  • Disclosure and Conflicts of Interest: Reviewers must keep confidential any privileged information or ideas and avoid reviewing papers where they have a conflict of interest.

Authors’ Responsibilities

  • Reporting Standards: Authors should accurately present their research and discuss its significance, providing sufficient details and references for replication. Misleading or inaccurate statements are unethical.
  • Data Access and Retention: Authors may be required to provide raw data for editorial review and should be ready to do so within a reasonable time frame.
  • Originality and Plagiarism: Authors must ensure their work is original and properly cite the work of others. Plagiarized papers are rejected.
  • Multiple, Redundant, or Concurrent Publication: Authors must confirm that the manuscript is not published or under consideration elsewhere. Simultaneous submissions are unethical.
  • Acknowledgment of Sources: Authors must cite works that influenced their research.
  • Authorship: Only those who significantly contributed to the research should be credited as authors. The corresponding author must keep co-authors updated on the review process, and all authors must confirm the originality of the work upon acceptance.
  • Hazards and Human/Animal Subjects: Any work involving hazardous materials or research on human/animal subjects must clearly outline these aspects in the manuscript.
  • Disclosure and Conflicts of Interest: Authors must disclose any financial or other conflicts of interest that could affect the interpretation of their manuscript.
  • Correcting Errors: If an author identifies a significant error in a published work, they must promptly inform the journal editor or publisher to retract or correct the paper.

Lumina : Indonesian Journal of Neurology was first launched in 2025 in electronic format. The online version of Lumina : Indonesian Journal of Neurology, which is volume 1, was published in 2025. That same year, the journal was indexed in platforms such as … Along with enhancing governance, Lumina : Indonesian Journal of Neurology also aims to improve the quality of its publications, including by offering templates for authors.
