GUIDELINES FOR PREPARING AND SUBMITTING MANUSCRIPTS TO LUMINA: INDONESIAN JOURNAL OF NEUROLOGY (2026 EDITION)

1. Abstract

The abstract must be written entirely in English, formatted in a single-column layout, single-paragraph structure, with a maximum length of 250 words. Authors must follow one of the structured abstract styles below depending on the manuscript category:

a. For Original Research Articles / Systematic Reviews:
Introduction - Briefly explain the context of the study, problem background, and an overview of the study's purpose/objective.
Methods - Describe the methods, research design, population/sample, data collection procedures, and statistical analysis used.
Results - Summarize the main scientific findings, key data, and observations.
Conclusions - Briefly explain the main conclusion answering the study's objective, along with its practical or clinical implications.
Keywords: Keyword 1, Keyword 2, Keyword 3 (3-6 items).

b. For Case Reports / Case Series:
Introduction - Briefly explain the background of the condition, its clinical importance, rarity, or diagnostic/therapeutic challenge.
Case Presentation - Describe the clinical presentation, key diagnostic test results, treatment/management provided, and clinical outcome of the patient(s).
Discussion - Briefly highlight why this case is unique or noteworthy compared to existing medical literature.
Conclusions - Summarize the main clinical takeaway message or educational value from the case.
Keywords: Keyword 1, Keyword 2, Keyword 3 (3-6 items).

2. Introduction

Lumina: Indonesian Journal of Neurology (https://ojs.uph.edu/index.php/lumina) is a peer-reviewed journal dedicated to publishing high-quality scientific articles in neurology and related medical sciences. The journal is published by Universitas Pelita Harapan and accepts contributions from national and international academics, clinicians, and researchers.

Lumina accepts manuscripts originating from original scientific research results, comprehensive systematic review articles, and unique case reports/case series. All submitted articles undergo a rigorous peer-review process. The final decision regarding acceptance or rejection rests with the Editorial Board based on peer reviewers' recommendations.

3. Article Title, Author Name, and Affiliation Formatting

The title should be written in center alignment at the top of the first page (maximum 20 words, Calibri, 20 pt, uppercase, justified). Author names (without academic titles or degrees) and institutional affiliations are centered below the title (Calibri, 11 pt, Capitalize Each Word, justified).

The Corresponding Author must be indicated with a superscript asterisk (*). At the bottom of the left column on the first page, the corresponding author's email address and ORCID ID must be provided (Calibri, 10 pt, italic). All editorial communications - including manuscript tracking, review updates, revision submissions, and final decisions - will be conducted strictly and exclusively through the OJS portal.

If multiple authors are listed, separate their names with commas (,). First names must not be abbreviated. If an author has a single name, it should be entered as a single word in both the manuscript and the OJS metadata fields. Authors from different affiliations must be distinguished using superscript numbers (e.g., Author Name1). Affiliations are written in Calibri, 10 pt, italic, left-aligned, 1.15 line spacing.

4. General Manuscript Requirements

Manuscripts must be formatted using MS Word (.doc/.docx) according to the official journal template, available at: https://bit.ly/AuthorGuidelineLUMINA. Completed manuscripts are submitted via the OJS portal at: https://ojs.uph.edu/index.php/lumina after registering as an Author.

a. Language: All manuscripts must be written entirely in clear, concise, and grammatically correct academic English.
b. Typography: The entire manuscript must be formatted exclusively in Calibri font. No other typeface is permitted.
c. Blind Review: Authors must prepare a separate blinded version with all author-identifying information removed - including author names, affiliations, correspondence details, and the Acknowledgments section. Required for the double-blind peer review process.
d. Article Length: Minimum 17 pages (A4 size).
e. Page Setup: A4 (210 x 297 mm) - Top: 30 mm, Left: 25 mm, Bottom: 20 mm, Right: 20 mm.
f. Text Layout: Single-column for Title, Authors, Affiliations, and Abstract. Two-column (10 mm gap) for main body text, 1.15 line spacing.
g. Body Text: Calibri, 12 pt, justified, 1.15 line spacing.
h. Section Headings: Calibri, 14 pt, bold.
i. Tables and Figures: Placed inline after first citation. Oversized items go after the References section. No vertical lines in tables; only essential horizontal lines. Figure captions: Calibri, 10 pt, centered, below figure. Table captions: Calibri, 10 pt, above table.
j. Paragraph Indent: 10 mm from left margin; no extra space between paragraphs.
k. Terminology: Technical terms and Latin expressions in italics. Arabic numerals for all numbers, except at sentence start.

5. Instructions for Writing Manuscript Contents

Article Title: Maximum 20 words, stating the core method and objective without ambiguous abbreviations.

Abstract: Maximum 250 words, single paragraph, single-column. Must contain problem background, objectives, methods/case presentation, main results/discussion, and conclusions. Objectives stated in the abstract must be directly answered in the conclusion.

Introduction: Must present in sequence: (1) general background and clinical problem; (2) state-of-the-art literature review establishing novelty; (3) explicit research purpose or case rationale.

Materials and Methods / Case Presentation:
a. Original Research Articles: Describe study design, population/sample (including inclusion and exclusion criteria), data collection procedures, and statistical methods (including software and significance threshold). Primary chemical materials must include brand and purity (e.g., H2SO4 (Merck, 99%)); primary equipment must include manufacturer name. Ethical approval must be stated for studies involving human participants or animals.
b. Systematic Reviews / Meta-Analyses: Provide a detailed description of the review protocol (e.g., PRISMA), literature search strategy (databases, search terms, date ranges), inclusion/exclusion criteria, study selection process, quality assessment, and data synthesis methods.
c. Case Reports / Case Series: Provide thorough clinical details including chief complaints, relevant medical history, physical examination findings, key diagnostic test results, therapeutic management, and patient clinical outcomes.

Results and Discussion: Present findings clearly with supporting data. Scientifically explain why findings or trends occurred, based on scientific principles and comparison with published literature. Demonstrate how results answer the initial hypothesis or research objective.

Conclusion: Direct answer to the research hypothesis or objectives. Must synthesize core findings - not repeat results verbatim. Future research directions may be suggested where applicable. Written in a single paragraph without bullet points or numbering.

Conflict of Interest: Declare any conflicts of interest. If none, state: "The authors declared no conflict of interest."

Acknowledgments: For funding agencies, grant numbers, and significant contributors. If none, state: "The authors declared no acknowledgment."

Ethical Clearance: Studies involving human participants, human data, or animals must include: (1) ethics approval statement and consent, even if waived; (2) name of ethics committee and reference number. Studies involving client-owned animals must also include informed consent from the owner.

Consent: Specifically for case reports/case series, include a statement confirming that written informed consent was obtained from the patient (or parent/legal guardian) for publication of clinical details and accompanying images.

Funding: Declare any financial support. If none, state: "No external funding was received."

Use of Artificial Intelligence: Generative AI cannot be credited as an author or used to create original scientific content. Its use is strictly limited to language editing and grammar refinement. Authors must declare any AI tools used (tool name, version, provider, and purpose) in a dedicated section before References. If none, state: "The authors declare that no generative AI or AI-assisted technologies were used in the writing or preparation of this manuscript."

References: List all cited sources sequentially in Vancouver style. Full requirements, minimum counts, and formatting examples are detailed in Section 7 (References and Citations Requirements).

6. Guidelines for Writing Equations

Equations must be centered within the text column and generated exclusively using the MS Word Equation Editor (or OpenOffice Math). Number equations sequentially using Arabic numerals enclosed in parentheses - e.g., (1), (2) - aligned to the right margin. Refer to equations in the text as "Equation (1)".

7. References and Citations Requirements

Minimum counts:
a. Original Research Articles and Case Reports: minimum 15 references.
b. Systematic Reviews / Meta-Analyses: minimum 25 references.

Currency and Quality: At least 80% of references must come from peer-reviewed primary sources published within the last 10 years (e.g., 2017–2027 for a 2027 submission). Authors are strongly encouraged to prioritize original experimental or observational research over secondary reviews. 

Citation style: Vancouver Style. In-text citations use superscript numbers placed after the relevant text, e.g.: "...as previously reported.1" or "Smith et al.2 demonstrated that..." The superscript number corresponds to the reference number in the reference list. Use Mendeley, Zotero, or EndNote to manage references. Include DOI when available.

8. Instructions for Online Manuscript Submission

Prepare the following 3 required files before submitting:

1. Complete Manuscript - The full manuscript including all author information, formatted using the official template (.doc/.docx).
2. Blinded Manuscript - An identical copy with all author-identifying information removed (names, affiliations, correspondence details, and Acknowledgments section), for double-blind peer review (.doc/.docx).
3. Supporting Documents - Uploaded as a single file (.pdf) containing: 
a. Cover Letter (Mandatory for all submissions): Signed by the corresponding author, declaring that the manuscript is original, has not been published previously, and is not currently under consideration elsewhere.
b. Ethical Clearance Certificate (If applicable): Required for Original Research Articles involving human subjects, human data, or animals.
c. Patient Informed Consent Form (If applicable): Mandatory for Case Reports / Case Series

Submit at: https://ojs.uph.edu/index.php/lumina

Step 1 - Register: Create an Author account at https://ojs.uph.edu/index.php/lumina/user/register. Select the "Author" role.
Step 2 - New Submission: Log in and click "New Submission." The submission workflow consists of four (4) sequential steps:
1. Start - Select Journal Section and complete the submission checklist.
2. Upload Submission - Upload all required files individually via "Add File." Select the correct file type for each file.
3. Enter Metadata - Enter all author details in English (full names without titles, institutional affiliations, emails, and ORCID iDs), article title, abstract, and keywords.
4. Confirmation - Review all information and click "Finish Submission."

9. Conclusion

All manuscripts submitted to the Editorial Board of Lumina: Indonesian Journal of Neurology must strictly adhere to these author guidelines. Manuscripts that do not comply with the specified formatting, language, structural layout, or reference standards will be returned to the authors for revision prior to undergoing formal peer review.
