AUTHOR GUIDELINES

Japheths: Journal of Pharmaceutical and Health Sciences

1. About the Journal

Japheths: Journal of Pharmaceutical and Health Sciences is a peer-reviewed, open-access scientific journal published by the Faculty of Health Sciences, Universitas Pelita Harapan (UPH), Indonesia.

Japheths provides an international platform for the dissemination of high-quality scientific research, innovation, and scholarly perspectives in pharmaceutical and health sciences. The journal welcomes contributions from researchers, academics, healthcare professionals, and students from Indonesia and around the world.

The journal publishes research addressing pharmaceutical sciences, pharmacy practice, medical laboratory science, biology, biotechnology, health sciences, and related interdisciplinary fields.

Japheths welcomes the following manuscript types:

1. Original Research Articles

2. Review Articles

3. Short Communications

Authors are encouraged to submit manuscripts that demonstrate scientific originality, methodological rigor, relevance, and a clear contribution to knowledge and practice.

2. General Submission Requirements

Before submitting a manuscript, authors must ensure that the following requirements are fulfilled:

1. The manuscript is original and has not been previously published in any journal or other scientific publication.

2. The manuscript is not simultaneously submitted or under consideration by another journal.

3. All authors have read and approved the submitted version of the manuscript.

4. All authors agree to be accountable for the content of the work.

5. The manuscript falls within the focus and scope of Japheths.

6. The research has been conducted according to applicable scientific, ethical, and regulatory standards.

7. Appropriate ethical approval and/or informed consent is provided when required.

8. All sources of funding and potential conflicts of interest are disclosed.

9. All data, figures, tables, and other materials are reported accurately.

10. Appropriate permissions have been obtained for copyrighted material reproduced from other sources.

11. The manuscript follows the formatting and reference requirements described in these Author Guidelines.

12. The manuscript has been carefully checked for language, grammar, references, tables, figures, and supplementary materials before submission.

Manuscripts that do not comply with the basic requirements may be returned to the authors before entering the peer-review process.

3. Language

Japheths accepts manuscripts written in English.

Authors are responsible for ensuring that the manuscript is written in clear, accurate, and scientifically appropriate English.

Authors whose first language is not English are encouraged to have their manuscript reviewed by a qualified English language editor or native English speaker before submission.

Language editing does not guarantee acceptance of a manuscript.

4. Manuscript Types

4.1 Original Research Article

Original Research Articles should present novel experimental, observational, analytical, clinical, laboratory, or interdisciplinary research.

The recommended structure is:

• Title

• Abstract

• Keywords

• Introduction

• Materials and Methods

• Results

• Discussion

• Conclusion

• Acknowledgments

• Author Contributions

• Funding

• Conflict of Interest

• Ethics Approval and/or Informed Consent, where applicable

• Data Availability Statement

• References

Recommended length: 4,000–10,000 words, including references, tables, and figure legends.

4.2 Review Article

Review Articles should provide a comprehensive, critical, and up-to-date synthesis of published literature on an important topic within the journal's scope.

Review articles may include:

• Narrative Reviews

• Systematic Reviews

• Scoping Reviews

• Integrative Reviews

• Other scientifically justified review formats

The recommended structure may include:

• Title

• Abstract

• Keywords

• Introduction

• Review Methodology

• Main Discussion

• Conclusions

• Acknowledgments

• Funding

• Conflict of Interest

• Data Availability Statement, where applicable

• References

Recommended length: 5,000–8,000 words, excluding references, tables, and figure legends.

Systematic reviews and meta-analyses should follow the relevant PRISMA reporting guidelines.

4.3 Short Communication

Short Communications should present concise but scientifically significant findings, preliminary results, methodological advances, or important observations that warrant rapid dissemination.

Recommended length: 2,000–3,000 words, excluding references, tables, and figure legends.

5. Manuscript Preparation

Manuscripts should be submitted as Microsoft Word documents (.doc or .docx).

5.1 General Formatting

Authors should follow these formatting requirements:

Authors are strongly encouraged to use the official Japheths manuscript template.

6. Title Page

The title page should contain:

1. Full title of the manuscript

2. Full names of all authors

3. Institutional affiliations

4. Department, faculty/institution, city, and country

5. Corresponding author's name

6. Corresponding author's institutional address

7. Corresponding author's email address

The title should be concise, informative, and accurately reflect the content of the manuscript.

Avoid unnecessary abbreviations and overly broad statements in the title.

7. Abstract

The abstract should be concise and informative.

For Original Research Articles, the abstract should preferably be structured into:

• Background

• Objective

• Methods

• Results

• Conclusion

Recommended maximum length: 250 words.

For Review Articles and Short Communications, the abstract may be structured according to the nature of the manuscript but should clearly communicate the purpose, main content, and principal conclusions.

The abstract should not contain references unless essential.

8. Keywords

Provide 3–6 keywords immediately after the abstract.

Keywords should represent the major concepts of the manuscript and should preferably use internationally recognized scientific terminology.

Avoid unnecessarily repeating words already contained in the title.

9. Introduction

The Introduction should:

1. Provide relevant scientific background.

2. Identify the current knowledge or research gap.

3. Explain the rationale for the study.

4. Clearly state the research objective or hypothesis.

The Introduction should be concise and supported by relevant and current references.

10. Materials and Methods

The Materials and Methods section must provide sufficient information to allow the study to be understood and, where appropriate, reproduced.

Authors should clearly describe:

• Study design

• Study location and period, where relevant

• Study population or experimental materials

• Sample size and sampling procedures

• Inclusion and exclusion criteria, where applicable

• Experimental procedures

• Reagents, materials, instruments, and manufacturers

• Analytical methods

• Statistical methods

• Software used

• Ethical approval and informed consent, where applicable

• Clinical trial registration, where applicable

Established methods may be cited rather than described in excessive detail. Any substantial modification to a previously published method must be clearly explained.

11. Results

Results should be presented clearly and logically.

Authors should:

• Present findings objectively.

• Avoid unnecessary repetition of information contained in tables and figures.

• Report appropriate statistical analyses.

• Provide exact statistical values where appropriate.

• Clearly distinguish primary and secondary outcomes where relevant.

Tables and figures should complement rather than duplicate the main text.

12. Discussion

The Discussion should interpret the findings in relation to:

• The research objectives.

• Previous studies.

• Existing scientific knowledge.

• Possible mechanisms or explanations.

• Strengths and limitations of the study.

• Implications for pharmaceutical and health sciences.

• Recommendations for future research, where appropriate.

The Discussion should not simply repeat the Results section.

13. Conclusion

The Conclusion should provide a concise statement of the principal findings and their scientific or practical implications.

Conclusions should be supported by the results presented in the manuscript and should not introduce new data.

14. Tables

Tables should:

1. Be numbered consecutively as Table 1, Table 2, Table 3, etc.

2. Be cited in numerical order in the text.

3. Have a concise and informative title.

4. Be understandable without referring extensively to the main text.

5. Define abbreviations used in the table.

6. Avoid unnecessary duplication of information presented elsewhere.

Tables should be submitted in an editable format and should not be submitted as images when editable data are available.

15. Figures and Illustrations

Figures should be numbered consecutively as Figure 1, Figure 2, Figure 3, etc.

Each figure should have:

• A concise figure title or legend.

• Appropriate axis labels.

• Clearly defined units.

• Legible text and symbols.

• Sufficient resolution for publication.

Authors must obtain permission for any previously published figure, photograph, diagram, or other copyrighted material.

Patient photographs or identifiable clinical images require appropriate written consent for publication.

16. Statistical Analysis

Statistical methods must be described clearly and appropriately.

Authors should report:

• Statistical tests used.

• Assumptions of the statistical tests, where relevant.

• Statistical software and version.

• Significance level.

• Appropriate measures of uncertainty, where applicable.

• Exact p-values where appropriate.

The use of statistical methods should be consistent with the study design and characteristics of the data.

Authors should avoid inappropriate use of statistical tests and should not rely solely on statistical significance to determine scientific importance.

17. Reporting Guidelines

Authors should follow internationally recognized reporting guidelines appropriate to the study design.

Examples include:

• CONSORT – randomized controlled trials

• STROBE – observational studies

• PRISMA – systematic reviews and meta-analyses

• CARE – case reports

• STARD – diagnostic accuracy studies

• ARRIVE – animal research

• SQUIRE – quality improvement studies

• COREQ – qualitative research

• CHEERS – health economic evaluations

Authors should consult the EQUATOR Network to identify the appropriate reporting guideline for their study design.

Where applicable, authors may be required to submit the relevant reporting checklist together with the manuscript.

18. Research Ethics

Japheths is committed to the highest standards of ethical research and publication. 

18.1 Research Involving Human Participants

Research involving human participants must comply with applicable national and international ethical standards, including the principles of the Declaration of Helsinki.

Authors must obtain approval from an appropriate independent ethics committee, institutional review board (IRB), or equivalent ethics review body before conducting the research.

The manuscript must include:

• Name of the ethics committee/institution.

• Ethics approval number/reference.

• Date of approval, where available.

• A statement confirming compliance with applicable ethical standards.

Authors should be prepared to provide documentation of ethical approval if requested by the Editor.

18.2 Informed Consent

Written informed consent must be obtained from human participants when required by applicable regulations and ethical standards.

Where research involves identifiable information, photographs, clinical images, case reports, or other potentially identifiable patient information, authors must obtain appropriate written consent for publication.

Patient names, initials, medical record numbers, photographs, or other unnecessary identifying information must not be published.

If a participant's identity could reasonably be recognized, the manuscript should clearly state that appropriate consent for publication was obtained.

18.3 Research Involving Animals

Research involving laboratory animals must comply with relevant institutional, national, and international standards for the care and use of laboratory animals.

Authors must provide:

• Name of the institutional or animal ethics committee.

• Ethics approval number/reference.

• Relevant animal welfare regulations or guidelines followed.

• Information regarding animal species, strain, sex, age, and relevant characteristics.

• Housing and husbandry conditions where these may influence the results.

• Appropriate details of anesthesia, analgesia, humane endpoints, and euthanasia where applicable.

Authors are strongly encouraged to follow the ARRIVE 2.0 guidelines when reporting animal research.

18.4 Human Biological Samples and Patient Data

Studies involving human biological samples, medical records, laboratory specimens, genomic data, or other patient-related information must comply with applicable ethical and privacy regulations.

Authors must ensure that patient confidentiality is maintained throughout the research and publication process.

All identifying information should be removed or appropriately anonymized unless disclosure is scientifically essential and valid consent for publication has been obtained.

19. Clinical Trial Registration

Clinical trials involving prospective assignment of human participants to health-related interventions should be registered in an appropriate publicly accessible clinical trial registry.

The registration number should be provided in the manuscript, preferably at the end of the abstract and in the Methods section.

Authors should ensure that the registered trial information is consistent with the information reported in the manuscript.

20. Data Availability Statement

Authors should provide a Data Availability Statement where appropriate.

Examples include:

Data available in a public repository:

The datasets generated and/or analyzed during the current study are available in [repository name] at [DOI or persistent link].

Data available upon reasonable request:

The datasets generated and/or analyzed during the current study are available from the corresponding author upon reasonable request.

Data restrictions:

The datasets generated and/or analyzed during the current study are not publicly available because of [ethical, privacy, legal, or institutional restrictions] but may be available from the corresponding author upon reasonable request, subject to applicable restrictions.

Authors must not disclose confidential or identifiable patient information.

21. Authorship and Author Contributions

Authorship should be based on substantial intellectual contributions to the research and manuscript.

Japheths follows internationally recognized authorship principles. Each listed author should have made a substantial contribution to the conception or design of the work, acquisition, analysis, or interpretation of data; contributed to drafting or critically revising the manuscript; approved the final version; and agreed to be accountable for the work.

All individuals who qualify for authorship should be included as authors.

Guest authorship, honorary authorship, and ghost authorship are not acceptable.

Authors are encouraged to provide a CRediT Author Statement, using appropriate contributor roles such as:

• Conceptualization

• Methodology

• Software

• Validation

• Formal Analysis

• Investigation

• Resources

• Data Curation

• Writing – Original Draft

• Writing – Review & Editing

• Visualization

• Supervision

• Project Administration

• Funding Acquisition

Any change in authorship after submission requires written agreement from all authors and approval by the Editor.

22. Corresponding Author

The corresponding author is responsible for communication with the journal during submission, peer review, revision, and publication.

The corresponding author must ensure that:

1. All authors have approved the submitted manuscript.

2. All authors have agreed to the authorship order.

3. All authors' institutional affiliations are accurate.

4. All required declarations have been completed.

5. Ethical approval and informed consent requirements have been fulfilled.

6. Any questions regarding data integrity or research ethics can be appropriately addressed.

23. Funding Statement

All sources of financial support must be disclosed.

The funding statement should include:

• Name of the funding organization.

• Grant number, if applicable.

• Role of the funder in the research, if applicable.

Example:

Funding: This research was supported by [Funding Organization] under Grant No. [XXXX].

If no specific funding was received:

Funding: This research received no specific grant from any funding agency in the public, commercial, or not-for-profit sectors.

24. Conflict of Interest

Authors must disclose any financial or non-financial relationships that could influence, or could reasonably be perceived to influence, the research or its interpretation.

Examples include:

• Research funding.

• Employment.

• Consultancy.

• Honoraria.

• Patents.

• Stock ownership.

• Personal or professional relationships.

• Other relevant competing interests.

If no conflict exists, authors should state:

Conflict of Interest: The authors declare that there are no conflicts of interest related to this study.

25. Acknowledgments

Individuals who contributed to the research but do not meet the criteria for authorship may be acknowledged.

Examples include:

• Technical assistance.

• Laboratory assistance.

• Language editing.

• Administrative support.

• Data collection assistance.

Authors should obtain permission from individuals before including their names in the Acknowledgments section.

26. Use of Artificial Intelligence

Japheths recognizes that artificial intelligence (AI) and large language models (LLMs) may be used as tools during manuscript preparation. However, AI tools cannot be listed as authors or co-authors.

Authors remain fully responsible for:

• The accuracy of the manuscript.

• The originality of the work.

• The integrity of the data.

• Appropriate citation of sources.

• Detection and prevention of plagiarism.

• Verification of AI-generated content.

Authors must disclose the use of AI-assisted technologies during manuscript preparation.

If AI was used for language editing or writing assistance, authors should disclose this in the Acknowledgments or an appropriate declaration.

Example:

AI-Assisted Technology: The authors used [name of AI tool] for language editing and/or improving the clarity of the manuscript. All AI-assisted content was reviewed, verified, and revised by the authors, who take full responsibility for the final content.

If AI was used for data analysis, data generation, image generation, coding, or other substantive research activities, the use must be described transparently in the relevant section of the manuscript.

AI tools must not be used to fabricate data, generate false references, manipulate research findings, or create misleading scientific images.

27. Plagiarism and Research Misconduct

Japheths does not tolerate plagiarism, fabrication, falsification, duplicate publication, inappropriate image manipulation, citation manipulation, or other forms of research misconduct.

All submitted manuscripts may be screened using plagiarism-detection software.

Authors must properly acknowledge all sources and ensure that quotations, paraphrased material, data, images, and other intellectual contributions are appropriately cited.

If research misconduct is suspected, the journal may investigate the matter in accordance with applicable publication ethics standards and may contact the authors' institutions when necessary.

Possible actions include:

• Request for clarification.

• Manuscript rejection.

• Retraction or correction of a published article.

• Notification of the author's institution or relevant authority.

28. Duplicate and Redundant Publication

A manuscript must not be submitted simultaneously to more than one journal.

Manuscripts that substantially overlap with previously published or submitted work must be disclosed to the Editor at the time of submission.

Authors must provide information regarding any related publications, conference papers, preprints, or previously disseminated versions of the work when relevant.

The Editor will determine whether the submitted manuscript represents an acceptable form of publication.

29. References

References should be accurate, complete, and directly relevant to the manuscript.

Authors should:

1. Cite original research whenever possible.

2. Use current and authoritative references.

3. Verify all bibliographic information.

4. Ensure that every reference cited in the text appears in the reference list.

5. Ensure that every reference in the reference list is cited in the text.

6. Avoid excessive self-citation.

7. Avoid citation manipulation.

Authors are encouraged to use reference management software such as Mendeley, EndNote, or Zotero.

References should be listed in the order they appear in the manuscript (including citations in tables and legends) and listed one by one at the end of the manuscript in Montserrat  with font size 9. We recommend that the reference list be written with the help of bibliographic software packages (such as mendeley, zotero, etc.) to avoid typos and duplicate references. list of references and citations written in elsevier-vancouver styles (see at https://citationsy.com/styles/elsevier-vancouver). A digital object identifier (DOI) must be provided for all references where available. In the text, the reference number must be placed in square brackets [], and placed before the punctuation mark; for example [1], [1–3] or [1,3]. self-citations must be less than 25%.

Authors should provide a DOI or persistent identifier whenever available.

31. Supplementary Materials

Supplementary materials may be submitted when they provide additional information that supports the main manuscript.

Examples include:

• Additional tables.

• Additional figures.

• Detailed protocols.

• Questionnaires.

• Statistical analyses.

• Additional datasets.

• Ethical approval documentation, where appropriate.

Supplementary files should be clearly labeled and cited in the manuscript.

32. Copyright and Publication Rights

Authors retain responsibility for ensuring that their manuscript does not infringe the copyright or intellectual property rights of others.

By submitting a manuscript, authors confirm that they have the authority to submit the work for publication.

Copyright and licensing arrangements will follow the policy specified by Japheths on the journal website.

Authors should consult the journal's current Copyright Notice and Open Access policy before submission.

33. Open Access

Japheths is an open-access journal. Published articles are made freely available to readers in accordance with the journal's open-access and licensing policy.

Authors should consult the journal website for the current licensing and publication-charge policies.

34. Peer Review

All manuscripts undergo an initial editorial assessment before peer review.

The initial assessment considers:

• Relevance to the journal's scope.

• Originality.

• Scientific quality.

• Methodological rigor.

• Ethical compliance.

• Clarity and completeness.

• Compliance with the Author Guidelines.

Manuscripts that pass the initial assessment are sent for peer review.

Japheths uses a double-blind peer-review process, in which the identities of authors and reviewers are concealed from one another during the review process.

The Editor-in-Chief and/or handling editor makes the final editorial decision based on the reviewers' evaluations, scientific quality, and editorial considerations.

Possible decisions include:

• Accept

• Minor Revision

• Major Revision

• Resubmit for Review

• Reject

A decision to invite revision does not guarantee eventual acceptance.

35. Revision of Manuscripts

When revisions are requested, authors should:

1. Submit a revised manuscript within the specified deadline.

2. Provide a detailed response to each reviewer comment.

3. Clearly indicate changes made in the revised manuscript.

4. Explain scientifically justified reasons for any reviewer recommendation that is not followed.

The revised manuscript may be returned to the original reviewers or evaluated by the Editor.

36. Corrections, Retractions, and Post-Publication Issues

Authors have a responsibility to notify the journal promptly if they discover a significant error in their published article.

Japheths may publish:

• Corrections.

• Errata.

• Expressions of concern.

• Retractions.

Post-publication actions will be handled in accordance with established publication ethics principles and the nature of the identified issue.

37. Submission Procedure

Manuscripts must be submitted electronically through the official Japheths online submission system.

Authors should:

1. Register an account on the Japheths OJS platform.

2. Log in to the journal system.

3. Start a new submission.

4. Select the appropriate manuscript section.

5. Complete the submission metadata.

6. Enter all author information accurately.

7. Upload the manuscript.

8. Upload supplementary files, where applicable.

9. Complete the required declarations.

10. Confirm the submission.

Authors should not submit manuscripts simultaneously by email unless specifically requested by the Editorial Office.

38. Submission Checklist

Before clicking "Submit," authors should confirm:

• The manuscript is within the scope of Japheths.

• The manuscript is original and has not been published elsewhere.

• The manuscript is not under consideration by another journal.

• All authors have approved the manuscript.

• The author order has been approved by all authors.

• The corresponding author's information is complete and accurate.

• The manuscript follows the required formatting.

• The abstract and keywords are provided.

• All tables and figures are appropriately cited.

• References are complete and accurate.

• Ethical approval is provided where required.

• Informed consent is provided where required.

• Animal ethics approval is provided where required.

• Author contributions are provided.

• Data availability is addressed.

• AI use has been disclosed where applicable.

• Permission has been obtained for copyrighted material.

• The manuscript has been checked for plagiarism and inappropriate text overlap.
