Compressor is a tool used to reduce the dynamics of a sound. In its development, many types appeared and one of the most famous is the "1176" FET type. This type uses a transistor as a signal-reading sensor which produces fast attack and release times and rich harmonic content. The purpose of this study was to analyze the harmonic content produced by both hardware and software on the FET type "1176" audio compressor. The research method used is measurement-based quantitative. Warm Audio WA76 hardware was used as a reference, and the frequency content was compared against 13 “1176” FET-based software. The results of harmonic content are grouped into four groups. These groups are assigned based on the occurrence of the harmonics; (1) has odd-even harmonics such as the WA76 device at 100 Hz and 1000 Hz fundamental frequencies, (2) has odd-even harmonics such as the WA76 device only at 100 Hz fundamental frequency, (3) only odd harmonic frequencies appear, (4) content harmonics that are not the same as WA76. This study shows that no software contains the same harmonic content as hardware. It is hoped that this research can be a reference for sound engineers in choosing the “1176” compressor according to the context at hand.
Bahasa Indonesia Abstract:
