Abstract

Based on the observation of the test results during the identification of the problem on grade 11 senior school found 17 students who did not pass the minimum standard criteria set by the school, 70. The test results showed a problem with students' cognitive learning results. It can be seen; that there were 17 students who did not reach the minimum standard criteria from 23 students. Referring to these problems, the researcher then carried out research with the purpose to improve cognitive learning outcomes with the Problem-Solving Learning model. This study aims to 1) find out whether the application of the Problem-Solving Learning model can improve students’ cognitive achievement, and 2) explain how the application of the Problem-Solving Learning model can improve students' cognitive achievement on grade VIII about social mobility at Surabaya High School.

This research was using the Pelton action research model. Data collection uses test results, test rubrics, and reflection journals as data sources. The learning results indicators researched were the minimum standard criteria, C2, and C4. While the Problem-Solving Learning procedures are 1) Students identify and describe to find the facts of the problem given by the teacher, 2) Students discuss to find solutions or solve the problem, 3) Students test the existing problems by having discussions with their friends or with teacher, demonstration, role play, etc., 4) Students determine the precise solution for the problem, and 5) Students conclude the problems relevance with their daily life.

The instrument data analysis showed an increasing number in students whom passed the minimum standard score on the first implementation and the first implementation. In the first implementation there were 19 students who can pass the minimum standard score (70) from 23 students and on the secondimplementation all students are able to pass minimum standard score (70). Based on those data, the implementation of Problem-Solving Learning model solved the problem of cognitive achievement of grade 11 students’ in high school Surabaya.
