EXPLAINING MALAYSIA’S MEDIATION IN THE THAILAND-CAMBODIA CONFLICT THROUGH LIBERALISM

Konflik perbatasan antara Thailand dan Kamboja kembali memanas pada pertengahan tahun 2025 akibat pelanggaran kode etik yang dilakukan oleh Perdana Menteri Paetongtarn Shinawatra dalam sebuah rekaman panggilan telepon. Meskipun Shinawatra akhirnya diberhentikan dari jabatannya, rakyat Thailand tampaknya kembali bangkit untuk memperjuangkan agar Preah Vihear dimasukkan ke dalam wilayah mereka. Sebagai tanggapan, negara tetangga Malaysia menawarkan diri untuk bertindak sebagai mediator dalam menyelesaikan konflik Bangkok-Phnom Penh. Makalah ini berfokus pada pemeriksaan faktor-faktor yang memengaruhi keputusan Malaysia melalui kerangka neorealis. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan pengaruh kekuatan hegemonik (Amerika Serikat) dan ancaman yang dirasakan (potensi eskalasi konflik dan kedekatan geografis) yang mendorong Malaysia untuk menengahi konflik sebagai bentuk realisme defensif.
